A Account of Unexpected Generosity: When a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground
During the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I figured to arrange a place to stay when I arrived, yet upon reaching the city, a major event was in town and all the budget hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.
Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the terminal – but quickly found Canberra airport, not like the one back home, is not open all night. Unsure of what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded public transport and began walking near the casino, reasoning I could pass the evening in an establishment that was open through the night. This was not ideal in the best shape for acing a crucial interview the next morning, but as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.
We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
It seems I seemed out of place as a female student spotted me walking aimlessly through the city center and asked if I was OK. I recounted the story of my accommodation crisis and right away she offered I was welcome to sleep on the ground of her dormitory at the Australian National University – which was perfect, as that’s where my medical school interview would take place the next morning. She even offered some food: one filled rolls she had from her part-time job. I had access to warm shower facilities and a protected spot and safe to sleep.
In retrospect, I can appreciate what a big chance she undertook as a woman letting a guy she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. In those days I existed within my own unawareness and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, it astounds me she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.
Ultimately, I did not study at that university, and I didn’t meet her again, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of kindness. I hope the universe has rewarded her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more individuals with such compassion.
