The vehicles for the 2026 season are set to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious than this year.

Formula 1 has introduced the simplified vocabulary that will be used to explain the advanced features of its upcoming 2026 regulations.

The sport is introducing what is arguably the biggest regulation change in its competitive history starting in 2026, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the compulsory introduction of fully sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which maintain the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a greatly enhanced battery power, driving major innovations in the aero packages.

Over a race distance, pilots will tactically deploy battery power – sometimes even flying laps – to secure the optimal result.

Extensive fan consultation were conducted with a mix of viewers, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to identify which terms would aid comprehension of the main elements of the new regulations.

The primary aim was to render a range of advanced new areas of the competition as easy to grasp as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for certain devices – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the adjustable aero – have been abandoned in preference for intuitive labels that directly explain the real-world effect of the innovation.

Key Technical Innovations

Regulators explain that racers will have increased agency to choose strategies regarding energy deployment, harvesting, and efficiency.

The upcoming changes mandate a series of modes that will be shown on broadcast screens to improve the viewers' comprehension of the strategic duel.

  • Attack Mode: This supersedes the present overtaking aid. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy deployable when a driver is less than a second the leading car to execute an overtaking maneuver.
  • Power Mode: This is a manual energy deployment from the hybrid system that can be deployed for overtaking or defending. It grants the pilot maximum power at the click of a switch.

Both of these crucial modes will have to be managed carefully, as the total energy is capped.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the front and rear wings move automatically – spreading on the straights for low aerodynamic resistance and top speed, and closing in the corners for maximum downforce.
  • Energy Harvesting: The system can replenish their battery with power recovered from braking, or during coasting at the conclusion of a straight or in corners where only reduced throttle is required.

Car Design Evolution

The next-generation machines will be smaller and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a wheelbase cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight reduced by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is anticipated to be reduced by approximately 15-30%, although constructors will naturally regain performance as they refine their designs.

Air resistance has been reduced by 40%. The vehicles will feature adjustable aero systems – front and rear wings will adjust on the straight sections to cut resistance and boost top speed and click back into place for maximum cornering performance.

Pirelli tyres will keep 18-inch wheel rims, but the tyres themselves will be slimmer, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

Power Unit Revolution

The 2026 engines will have an roughly half-and-half distribution in energy output by the petrol engine and the battery and motor, increasing from about one-fifth electric power in the current formula.

The ERS setup is simplified through the elimination of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the sophisticated and pricey component that generated electricity from the exhaust turbo.

Every car on the grid will be mandated to operate on fully sustainable fuel, manufactured from biomass or synthetic industrial processes.
