Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
