Arteta Applauds a More Dependable Team and Acknowledges Havertz Injury Blow.
Mikel Arteta feels assured that his team can persist in handling with injury setbacks after disclosing that attacker Kai Havertz remains out for the coming weeks.
Prolonged Recovery for Havertz
The German forward has been out since the summer after undergoing an operation on his knee. Originally slated to be available earlier in December, Arteta explained the player hit a snag when advancing his rehabilitation and failed to reach “to the next level.”
“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a team that is far more dependable and has greater depth,” Arteta said.
Selection Dilemma for Midweek Fixture
This development leaves a tactical puzzle for Wednesday’s match against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between sticking with Mikel Merino, who found the net playing out of position against Chelsea, or reinstating Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly from a muscle injury in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus remains in contention post-recovery.
Defensive Concerns Persist
Further fitness issues affect centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who sat out the Stamford Bridge game. Consequently, summer signings Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié will probably start again in the heart of the defence for the Premier League front-runners.
Arteta believes the significant outlay on reinforcements in the last transfer window has resulted in a much stronger position to deal with such unavailability.

When asked if more options was benefiting their league challenge, Arteta was emphatic. “Indeed, as this campaign has seen more issues in the attacking line, and now the situation with the defence,” he continued.
“We learned from the past that we have to use players in different positions, and they must be capable to fulfil different roles if we want to compete at this level. And the example of Mikel is just the best one.”
Arteta's Support for Frustrated Star
Commenting on the setback highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, Arteta offered additional context. “He followed all protocols. He could not go to the required step and now the signs are like we have overcome that hurdle.”
The manager conveyed his personal desire to welcome him back. “Everyone is eager to have him. I mean, he is a footballer who, personally, I love so much for what he brings to the team, but his mentality, his nature. I watch him struggle being outside.”
