Astronaut Discloses Depression In the Wake of Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She concluded that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the mission, including increased focus on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted spacecraft departed Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of outer space.

The team of pioneers also included accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
