“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples include:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
