India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Smog Following Festival of Lights
Tuesday brought citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with inhaling severely hazardous air that was classified as the "severe" category.
Alarming Pollution Readings
Several parts of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the safe limit recommended by the World Health Organization.
In some locations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, equating to fifteen to twenty times exceeding healthy levels.
Firecracker Restrictions and New Developments
Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that covers the metropolis as the cold season approaches.
Yet recently, the recently formed city administration petitioned the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the ban.
The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only about 30% less polluting – as a balance between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".
Judicial Ruling and Implementation
Much to the frustration of environmental and health campaigners, judicial authorities agreed to the appeal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be used during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.
Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread disregard of the time restrictions across the city, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly version.
Several monitoring devices throughout the city recorded contamination peaking around late evening to some of the worst readings seen during the festival in at least the past three years.
Regional Implications
Extensive ignition of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a dispute with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles coming from India following the events.
Chronic Pollution Problem
Alarmingly severe readings of pollution in the capital have remained as a significant problem for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.
Near Diwali, the levels of toxic particles in the environment has been documented to spike to 70% higher the peak records ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly viewed as the planet's dirtiest city.
Various Pollution Factors
The situation in the city is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in neighbouring regions of farming communities.
In these regions, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating toxic pollution that becomes contained over the city as colder air arrives.
Public Health and Economic Consequences
The economic and health consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants living in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple research.
These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can result in cancer.
Environmental contamination is estimated to be responsible for approximately 10k untimely fatalities each year in Delhi.
