Israelis mark second anniversary of October 7th attacks as Gaza peace talks advance
Israelis have come together across the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken away to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"The aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.
He also promised to "realize all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Events Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled state remembrance events until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but gatherings still took place around the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the provisions of the proposal.
A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the talks revealed that an late session of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.
The source explained the day's discussions finished without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet produce any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to narrow the disparities between the two sides.
Key Issues in Talks
- A lasting truce
- The exchange of the prisoners still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies deliveries
- Future governance of the region

"After we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to rebuild," she continued.
Outside the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says nearly fifty remain in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.
Protester one woman stated: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the captives to be released. But we really want promises that we will be secure."
Surveys now consistently show that approximately the majority of the population desire the war to end in exchange for the release of the captives.

"My family are fearful of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, especially my little child who places his face on me all night."
"Every second we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."
