Pat Bamford Joins Sheffield United Despite Leading Abusive Chants About Manager Wilder
Patrick Bamford has signed with the Championship side only seven months after instigating insulting songs directed at their manager, Chris Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, a free agent since leaving Leeds, has signed a deal joining the Championship club in difficulty through the winter. His seven-year spell at Elland Road was ended amicably in August.
One of the player's final notable acts while at Leeds included starting offensive chants about Chris Wilder amid the club’s promotion celebrations in April. Now, the former England player will feature for Wilder as Sheffield United's boss looks to lift the team he loves out of the relegation zone.
Past Conflict Between the Striker and the Manager
Both men had history prior to Leeds won promotion back to the Premier League the previous campaign while Sheffield United were defeated in the promotion decider to Sunderland. Wilder described Bamford as “a muppet” when the situation was different during the 2018-19 season and the Blades secured direct promotion whereas Leeds missed out in the promotion playoffs.
Making Amends & Looking Ahead
All seems to have been resolved with Sheffield United, the league's lowest scorers, in desperate need of improvement in attack while Bamford aiming to revive his career.
The Wilder chant went viral in April. A repentant Patrick along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, phoned Wilder the next day.
Chris Wilder stated back then: “Spoke with Patrick yesterday and I’ve no problem whatsoever with it. I'm uncertain regarding the words used from a fellow pro! But I appreciated and respected him calling me.
“We spent a short while and similarly I spoke to Daniel Farke too and we had a longer discussion with him and he is a super guy, a top guy. Back in my playing days we used to give it and accept it and that is part and parcel of football across all levels, even on Sunday league. I have no problem at all. I'm fine with the situation and I told him that to Patrick.”
Recent Playing Struggles
The forward featured in 18 appearances for Leeds in the previous campaign but the former Forest, Chelsea FC & Middlesbrough striker has faced difficulties with fitness issues in recent years.
