The bodies "continued arriving: the numbers kept rising", the photographer reported. Among them were law enforcement personnel.
One individual was found without a head - others were "severely damaged", he said. Many also had what he described as knife injuries.
Over 120 individuals were fatally injured in the Tuesday operation against a criminal group - the bloodiest action the municipality has seen.
The photographer explained that he initially learned to the raid in the early hours by residents of the Alemão neighbourhood, who reached out alerting him there was a shoot-out.
The photographer made his way to a local medical facility, where the bodies were arriving.
The photographer stated that the police blocked media personnel from entering the Penha neighborhood, where the operation were occurring.
"Police officers formed a line and said: 'Media representatives are not allowed to pass'."
But Itan, who spent his childhood in the community, reported he succeeded to enter past the security perimeter, where he continued until dawn.
He explained that Tuesday night, community members commenced searching the mountainous area that borders Penha from the adjacent Alemão area for family members who had been missing after the operation.
Community members living in Penha organized the recovered bodies in a square - and Itan's photos reveal the emotions of the gathered crowd.
"The harsh reality of it all affected me deeply: the sorrow of the families, women collapsing, expectant spouses, sobbing, angry family members," the eyewitness remembered.
