On the eve of his half-decade plus one year as manager, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his longevity in North London is fundamentally dependent to delivering trophies.

The Journey So Far: From Appointment to Present

The former Arsenal captain took over on December 20th, 2019 and managed to steer the team to an FA Cup triumph not long after. But, that early success remains his only top-tier trophy following the departure of Unai Emery.

“Yes,” the manager said in response to a query about staying beyond 2027. “However, it is about today. And a lot of things must occur in the near future as well to warrant that continuation.”

He will mark the landmark with a game facing Everton, the very same club Arsenal played immediately following his hiring was confirmed.

The Current Landscape

As second-placed Manchester City playing against West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal risk losing first place in the Premier League prior to their fixture. This situation arises despite Arteta presiding over a squad that has endured more than a century of fitness issues from the beginning of last season.

He is tied down by 18 months to run on the contract he inked in 2024, yet understands fully that success is required sooner rather than later.

Survival in the Job

Arteta elaborated, stressing the constant necessity to justify his role. “In my view a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that depends on how you react, how you talk here, how you enter the dressing room, the message you convey.”

He added, praising the unwavering support from the club's ownership, yet identifying the players' commitment as the key factor. “In the final analysis, the key individuals are those players... During my tenure, I’ve seen just players with a level of attention, hunger for knowledge and give their all to the team.”

Injury Concerns

Arsenal heads into the Everton match coping with a fresh setback. Defender Ben White has been sidelined with a strain that is anticipated to sideline him for several weeks.

A Different Club

Despite the injury crisis and the immense scrutiny, Arteta believes the club's “priorities and messaging” are vastly different from when he initially took over.

He pointed to the record-breaking achievements as a sign they are nearing their goal. “Examine the performances, all the records that we... were breaking... We still haven't been able to do that [win trophies]. But that shows the caliber we've reached.”

In closing, the manager stated, “That is a level that the Premier League has not witnessed in the past. And our aim is to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
