While Swimmers Ran From Danger, Popular Picture Captures Lifeguard Dashing ‘All Out’ In the Direction of the Site.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, has always considered the renowned coast as her own backyard. On that particular weekend evening, she, like many neighbors, heard pops ringing out across the suburb.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was too light and no one could see them,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her home, she observed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks she saw told her trouble had occurred.

As she stood on the road, conversing with a couple who had hurried up the incline soaked, she noticed someone coming up from behind. This turned out to be a lifeguard, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi unshod from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – about 1.5km – while transporting a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was alone moving in the path that everyone was trying to flee, while holding that big kit and unshod … He moved at something that certainly every part of you would signal you to run in the other direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just fully full throttle racing.”

A Symbol of Bravery During Tragedy

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of moments of valour in the following of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, another beach safety officer, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to work with emergency personnel, police and ambulance crews treating numerous those hurt.

Community Response and Assistance

Doolan’s story was a single example among several to come out of the community, with the lifeguard clubhouse adjacent to the location of the attack becoming a makeshift hospital. “Our thanks go out to all for your supportive words and solidarity. We are deeply moved by the care directed at our personnel,” the group wrote. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it helps those impacted.”

Council Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that hires many professional lifeguards, said that the crew rose to the occasion from the instant the incident commenced until late that nighttime.

“There have been so many powerful accounts, but the widely-circulated picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” stated a local official.

“Our lifeguards demonstrate dedication every day in keeping our iconic beaches secure for visitors, but what we witnessed on that evening should be highly praised.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the terror of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is vital that we consider just how much light we have seen in the midst of such evil.”
